Safer Boating NZ and Maritime NZ, for Safer Boating Week (12-19 October) have created a 'Paddle Craft Guide'. This helpful and comprehensive booklet provides safety information for kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, sit-on-tops, Waka Ama, and canoes.

It's got a list of free apps and online advice, hazards to be aware of, and survival tips in case of emergency (such as advice about lifejackets and communication devices) and what to do if the worst happens.

The guide also recommends that paddlers check their craft and prep their gear, to be prepared for all eventualities.

If in doubt, don't go out!
